Tom Fellner

Lecturer: bachelor and master, head of the painting studio

Technical mentoring painting, painting workshop, artistic projects

Tom Fellner’s (*1956) background is Swiss-American. He received his B.A. in philosophy and art from the University of Washington, Seattle and an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University, New York. To further his understanding of traditional painting he spent two years studying «Painting Materials and Technique» at l’école nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris (Atelier Abraham Pincas).

Fellner develops new visual worlds in paint. His Monster Paintings contain not only monster toys, but also visual elements referencing art history. The intersection of the trivial with «classical» painting creates a charged dissonance. Tom Fellner’s painting can be compared with a style known as «Bad Painting». A common theme of the «bad» painters is their clear and unwavering commitment to the art form of painting. Fellner’s painting manifestly emphasizes the gap between low and high aesthetics, humorously and ironically hinting at a possible connection between trivial children’s toys and the “high art” of our adult world.

Tom Fellner has been involved in multiple solo and group exhibitions in New York and Switzerland. His latest solo exhibition was at Nicola von Senger, Zurich (2014). Fellner’s work has been incorporated in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Aargauer Kunsthaus, the art collection of the city of Zurich and numerous national and international private collections.
