SHINY, SHINY SHINY BOOTS OF LEATHER

This exhibition inspired by The Velvet Underground’s 1967 infamous song “Venus in Furs” looks at how sexuality, obsession and seduction reflect the individual in general, but especially the artist and his or her body in the relationship with political, social and personal conventions.
To which extent and when, if at all, are we masters of our own bodies? How do the physical outlines of an artist convert into his or her work? Can material represent politics? Is sexual submission contradictory to political activism?
“Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather” follows these- and other- questions as ambiguous motifs and brings together both works that refer to sexuality and the individual directly as well as such, that take an interest more in material qualities of supposed abstraction and formal seduction.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of screenings of shorter artist films as well as cinematic contexts. Including work by
