Lena Maria Thüring (*1981) lives and works in Zurich and Basel. Thüring graduated in 2007 with a degree in photography and in 2014 with a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). From 2014 to 2017 she was a member of the jury of The Technical Committee for Film and Media Art BS/BL in Basel.
At the core of Thuring’s artistic position is her interest in socio-political conditions and their effects on society. Using various media such as video, sound, photography, performance and installation, Thüring questions social systems and their underlying constructions. Spoken language is the central medium by way of which she makes process of the production of history visible and handles topics of linguistic articulation, collective and personal memories, social structures, gender and identity.
Lena Maria Thüring’s works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and institutions, including solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland; Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel; and Kunstmuseum im PROGR, Bern, and group exhibitions and screenings at the Kunsthalle Basel; Haus der Kulturen, Berlin; Nationalmuseum Reina Sofia, Madrid; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. In addition to numerous prizes such as the Swiss Art Award (2008); the Kiefer Hablitzel Foundation Prize (2009, 2011); Werkbeiträge der Stadt Zürich (2011, 2016); the Basel Manor Art Prize (2013); and a state-funded public art project at the Swiss Embassy in Seoul (2018). She has spent time in studios in Paris (2009) and New York (2010).
